Kurn Religious School View our Kurn Religious School curriculum and handbook Download our Kurn Religious School Registration Form Our Vision • The responsibility to convey Jewish education is a sacred trust, and an opportunity to share in the life-affirming, vibrant traditions of our people and our God. At Temple Emanu-El, we feel this responsibility profoundly, and we work lovingly to create the finest religious school experience in the country. • Students will develop a love and hunger for Jewish knowledge and experiences, and a pride in being Jewish. • Our students will become Judaically literate, and will develop a deep appreciation for and a commitment to full participation in the life of a Reform Temple and a Jewish community. Our Students The greatest success in Jewish education and experience is accomplished through a strong partnership with each child’s family. With your help, we will inculcate the finest Jewish values and knowledge in our students. They will: • Develop a strong knowledge of Judaism • Gain a profound sense of Jewish spirituality • Enjoy the process of Jewish learning Temple Emanu-El's Strauss Early Childhood Education center offers a complete program for children six weeks to five years. Please take an online tour of our facility and educational program. Hebrew School meets on Tuesday afternoons, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 p.m. The focus is liturgical Hebrew, which includes vocabulary from prayers and sacred texts. Periodic assessment tests are given to determine students' learning level and necessary modifications or adjustments to instruction. Temple's rich course of study provides solid training for each child as they prepare for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah, the important rite-of-passage that recognizes the Jewish child's entry as an adult into the sacred community of Israel. Our 9th Grade Program, taught by Rabbi Samuel M. Cohon, explores ethics and Jewish approaches to moral issues. In part we utilize Sacred Choices: Adolescent Relationships and Sexual Ethics, a comprehensive curriculum designed by the Union for Reform Judaism for congregations to teach sexual ethics to teens. In an environment where teens are continually confronted by pressures to conform and participate in behaviors for which they may not be physically and emotionally ready, the synagogue is a natural place for these conversations to take place. The Sacred Choices Middle School module encourages 9th graders to recognize that Jewish values are central to dealing with relationships. The Sacred Choices curriculum provides teens with a foundation on which they can make informed, responsible decisions about their health and behavior, including their sexuality, equips them with age-appropriate tools to help steer through friendships and relationships and offers Jewish answers to many of their questions about sexual behavior, avoiding the temptation to speak generally about values without grappling with the hard issues. In addition, we will study Jewish approaches to moral issues in a broader way by exploring the text Pirkei Avot, the Ethics of the Ancestors from the Mishnah. 10th Grade students participate in Confirmation class with Rabbi Jason Holtz every Sunday from noon to 1:00 pm. Confirmation was established as a vehicle to further Jewish education for our young people. Its purpose is to encourage intellectual and spiritual growth and to help strengthen bonds between the participants, the Jewish people, and our tradition. We will be covering such diverse topics as ethics, mitzvot, and Jewish adulthood, as well as preparing for the service led by our students at the end of the year. The Confirmation Service is a formal way of acknowledging before the entire community your child’s commitment to the Jewish people. Tucson's School for Jewish Studies is affectionately called "Hebrew High" by local teens. Students can continue with their studies through twelfth grade and receive a diploma for their ongoing commitment to Jewish learning. Temple Emanu-El's educational program also provides varied and exciting classes in Adult Education. |
